Cu
Abbreviation:
Alternative Names:
Cuprum, Copper Sulfate, Copper Gluconate
Copper is an essential nutrient for the body and is used to maintain healthy bones, blood vessels, nerves and immune function. It also contributes to iron absorption and in doing so, enables the body to form red blood cells. Low copper levels have been linked to neutropenia (low white blood cell count), high cholesterol, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Copper is used for the production of collagen and elastin, compounds that the body uses for skin, bone and other tissue health. Newer research has been studying copper for links in neuronal signaling.
