Arginine is an amino acid which is used heavily as a building block for proteins. It is considered a semi-essential rather than essential. This means that it is essential in certain circumstances, such as during pregnancy and infancy as well as during critical illness and trauma. Arginine is used by the body for many processes including blood flow regulation, mitochondrial function and cellular communication. It is necessary for the production of nitric oxide.
