Classification:
Isotonic Solution
Abbreviation:

Sodium Chloride is an isotonic crystalloid solution that is the most widely used solution for IV hydration. Isotonic means that the solution will not cause fluid shifting between the cells and the blood stream. Crystalloid means that the solution is a mixture of water and small solutes, in this case, sodium chloride. Sodium chloride is added to prevent any sort of bacterial growth within the solution. Many nutrients, supplements and medications are able to be mixed into a sodium chloride solution and administered via intravenous access safely.
